Proposed Krug Loop

For those of you who are familiar with Krug, this is my take on how we can make one long loop out of it. Some of the washed out gulley areas need to be re-routed, bridges need to be built, several existing sections need to be completely blocked off, a few new sections need to be flagged and several new sections are currently being rough cut. We have purposely tried to steer clear of the "haunted forest" area as much as possible as they seem to do whatever they want for their precious few weeks every year.
The goal is to make one long loop, eliminate as much as possible the confusing intersections and short cuts and to make this trail as single speed friendly as possible while still maintaining much of what we had in the past.
Also, I am not a fan of building trails just to build trails and I don't think we really need to add much more in the way of length to Krug. I for one do not look forward to maintaining much more than what we currently have with the Corbies, GSC, the Brownie, Krug and Sun Bridge.
Maybe if more people would get involved with trail maintenance I could see building more but at this point with the limited number of people willing to pitch in I just don't see the point.
Krug will never be an "easy" place ride and in my opinion that is not a bad thing. What it will be is an extremely fun trail that will provide as good a work out as you could ask for around these parts.
We could use all the help we can get with this as it is a pretty major undertaking. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to post them here.

I think we should use some of the new trail money that was slated for equipment and use it for laborers. In this way, the total lentgh of trail doesn't matter. I wish I had $5 for every hour spent working on the trails. I'd be livin well in Moab, baby! The hippie

Craig, I couldn't agree with you more regarding the length of our existing trails and maintaining what we already have.

What about this idea....

Breakdown the various trails we have into say 10-12 sections, maybe more. Dedicate each of these sections to a "trail steward" that would be responsible and held responsible for the maintenance of that section.

And another idea...

For those not willing to do trail maintenance I suggest an annual fee for anyone whom regularly rides the trails (or is consider part of the local riders group) that would go towards gas, trimmer line, chainsaw chains/sharpening?

This is something I would like to discuss amongst "the group". Any preliminary thoughts?

Lance,
I think trail stewardship would be a great idea.
We would have to get a good size group of the local riders together to discuss it though.
Not sure we'd have any luck charging people. Everything still has to remain voluntary.
I just wish people would get out there on their own and do something from time to time.

Charging a fee works if you own the land and are granting access. Can't charge for public stuff. I know we do all the work for the trails, but they are open to everyone.
As Craig said, we do now have a larger group of people that may help with the work. I don't think, assigned or not, some people will be responsible enough to do the work needed. That being said, some will do more than their share as they always have. Lansen would say something like "the honor system works only with those that have honor", or some hippie drug-induced crap along those lines. He's right though.
Truth be told, the Corbies and GSC trails are buffed for now. Clearing a downed tree or two after a storm and weedeating are about all that will be needed for their upkeep for awhile. Alot of energy will need to be focused in Krug this year. The river needs a walk-through also. The now-tell-me-something-I-don't-know hippie

I think we should make it manditory that all trail users own a chainsaw or at the very least a decent weedeater... Maybe Santa could help out with that one???

We have enough saws and people willing to brandish them. Screw owning a good weedeater...just be WILLING to use the ones we have! Shaun has all that equipment that just sits all lonely at the shop for most of the year. You see a tree down? Get the saw. The free-to-use-any-freakin-time & the-gas-oil-are-free-it-just-requires-u-2-get-off-your-ass-and-use-it saw! Do you know the one I'm speaking of? Shaun will have 2 saws, 3 weedeaters, and 2 blowers that can be used anytime by anyone (on the trails hopefully, and not your lawn service). Please tell one of us if the stuff is broken. Please don't bring it back broken and not tell anyone. It sucks to have a willing soul wanting to do work and having non-usable equipment. The youdonthave2likeityoujusthavetodoit hippie.

Wow, the hippie has spoken!!
Still, I saw Jason eyeing the Stihl the other day up at Krug... Deep down you know he has chainsaw envy! Think we should take up a collection and maybe get him a little junior sized Stihl all his own. Think's that's the least we could do to show our gratitude for all the entertaining posts he's provided this past year!

Jason already has some junior-sized equipment. You see the way the white camry got traded for the manly jeep. the insightful hippie
