More pics from Sat, RIM

The St. Joe RIM crew..

I think you will reconginze the three knuckelheads on the left. DCrook, CHoppey, RTracy (hippy).

JP and company on the right. Crook got them on the last lap in the middle of a crazy downpour.
Your laptimes were crazy good and consisitent.

Me on the right, pretty pumped, its my first potium EVER.... I did pass the number 4 guy in the last 30 yards to get it. I think he was changing out his water bottle or some s#!t. Owe well, he passed me while I was putting air in my front tire. Should have been paying attention...
I don't care, I am taking it!!!! Thought I heard Chariots of fire?????? ;)

Crook and I for the start.. Kinda glad I did some trial running this past month.

Pic of Hoppey. I am sure going like a bat out of hell..

Crook on a log crossing.

Me, same crossing, somehow don't look as graceful... Anyway...
I think this is Crook, but not sure...
Thats all I could find on heartlands website. Hippy, I can't believe I could not find one damn picture of you out there...
For race results, pics, etc...........
These guys at heartland put on the best races hands down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Krug... Getting Buff!

Just a few pics of Krug from this morning along with one of the guilty ones responsible for the
for getting the trails to this point. Randy and David have been de-nubbing and raking trash in several of the trails near the parking area. I got started on a little bench cutting and blowing off what had been weedeated. All of the trails above the waterfall along with the bridges trail have been blown so far. Hoping to get the entire trail blown this week which will really cut down on the flat tires. After weedeating and blowing things are really starting to look buff.

RIDE KRUG!!

Everyone needs to get out and try the "new" Krug! I rode the entire loop today, it was soft but still fun. We need to get everyone out to enjoy the fruits of a few peoples labor! CH, RT, DC and any others who have put time in at Krug, "THANK YOU"!
Everyone needs to get out and try the "new" Krug! (did I already mention that?) The sooner we get these trails packed down the more people are going to love it and ride it.

CH,
If you were riding today, I hope you enjoyed the web free trails! I ate a bunch of the little furry creepy crawlies for you.

Krug, RIP & Tour of MO

OK, I fully intended to boycott the blog (take my ball and go home) because of the verbal abuse that I was taking about this whole weed-eating fiasco... After all, I am a sensitive fellow ;)_
Well, I did take a bit of an excursion out to Krug over the weekend to kill some time (avoid panting my house) and HOLY CRAP!!! If I was feeling a bit guilty for not putting my time behind a power-tool lately before I saw what all has been done, I sure as hell feel guilty now...
I was dumbfounded by the amount of work that has been done over there, you can't really comprehend it until you get out there and ride it... Awesome!!!!
I particularly like the creek crossings! It flows great, can't Wait to feel the burn while flying through there when there is some hard packed singletrack...
I did get a bit mixed up on top of the park around the "pine tree forest" area, so I never quite made it out where I was supposed to. But anyway, I just wanted to say bravo, nicely done, it looks wonderful...

On another note, RIP (Rapture in Misery) is August 15th, and will be here before you know it. I suggest getting as much saddle time in right now.. Its better to kick your own ass before the race than during! Which will probably be the case anyway, just a suggestion...

Owe, also, for those of you that care, the Tour of Missouri is back ON!!!

One more thing, Ed, I hear the kids bike races were awesome!!

The ToM is an economic boon to the state and our cities...it would be sad to lose it. For those interested, please read the letter below from the Lt. Gov.

Friends,

By now, some of you may have heard rumors regarding Gov. Nixon freezing state funds for the 2009 Tour of Missouri. I would like to share with you the details that we currently have:

On Wednesday, at the close of business, I was informed by the Division of Tourism that the money set aside for the Tour of Missouri was frozen by Gov. Nixon's administration. The state's commitment for the 2009 Tour of Missouri was $1.5 million. Without these funds, which are available and approved by the Tourism Commission, the Tour of Missouri will cease to exist.

At this time, I have requested a special meeting of the Missouri Tourism Commission to evaluate our options and decide what our next step should be.

As you know, we are very close to putting the final touches on the race this year. Our sponsors have invested and we are on track with our fundraising goals. Teams from across the world, the same teams now racing in the Tour de France, have been invited to our state, and communities across Missouri are making great preparations for the race. Contracts have been signed by the state, cities, sponsors and vendors and cutting this funding will leave the state susceptible to wasteful litigation.

Right now, I am urging cycling fans across our great state, and around the world to contact Gov. Jay Nixon at 573-751-3222and tell him to release the funding for the largest sporting event ever held in our state.

I am grateful for the supporters, sponsors, volunteers and spectators who in the past two years have helped generate nearly $60 million in economic impact for our state, and brought over 800,000 visitors to the race.

With your help, I truly believe we can ensure the survival and success of the 2009 Tour of Missouri.

Sincerely,
PeterKinder
PETER D. KINDER
Lt. Governor, Chairman of the Missouri Tourism Commission

Call Gov. Jay Nixon at 573-751-3222 and tell him to save our race!

Kids Tour of St. Joseph

For anyone willing to help and/or bring your kids out to ride, the first Stage of the Kids Tour is this Saturday (July 11) at Hyde Park. Registration starts at 9, rides start at 10:00. All participants receive an award medal and there will be drawings for prizes. The course consists primarily of one loop around the entire sidewalk path.

We'd love to see as much support and presence as possible from the local biking community. Volunteer work will consist mainly of course marshals around the sidewalk throughout the park. Thus most volunteers will be free to leave after the kids finish their rides... likely around 11:00.

Call me (816) 271-4671 if you'd like more info or visit the City's website at www.stjoemo.info
Thanks gang.

THIS IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY!!!!!

Randy, David and I are planning to do some more weedeating at Krug this Saturday morning from about 6 am to around 10 am. If we could get three more people to help out, we could work in three tandems of two and really get through a good amount of trail. Should be nice and cool in the morning.
Please post a comment on this blog if you can help out.
Thanks,
CH

In the flippen 80’s, can you believe it?

Got back from the lake on Sunday, completely panning on doing absolutely nothing.. Damn, its absolutely perfect outside.. Cant waist a day like this, got the ok from the boss, aka. Wife, and out the door!
The trials are great! I pity anyone who did not get their A$$ out there to enjoy it (insert countless remarks about how your all dehydrated from weedeeting here).. Looks like its supposed to be this way all week.. Take advantage man, take advantage. Yes, spiders are coming out, but don’t be a bloody wanker!

Thank you fellas! (Hippy, Crook) for your work, as always, yes I am a lazy loser and we are ALL lucky to have you guys out there working. Hoppy too, if he does not intend to say in Mexico..

Thanks for weedeating!
When the hell is Lansen coming back, we miss your posts dude!?!?

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Tired of that post.....

Better get out and ride before the spiders come out... Then its you first through the trail...
Its hot as hell, but the trails are nice right now..

More on Krug

More weedeating at Krug was done this week. Randy and Lance made it through the newly re-routed shorter switchbacks that now tie into the new outlet of the tree house trail. They also made it further down the trail to the new connection to the center trail that runs parrallel to the old climb that tops out at the boulders. This trail then comes back down that same hill and re-crossess the rode and ties into the remaining lower section of the trail that ends at the waterfall. This has all been weed eated now and can be ridden (although some benchcutting still needs to be done) Randy also spent several hours cutting back the majorly over grown section of this existing trail about a hundred yards or so before the waterfall.
The new loop will not cross the creek anymore by the waterfall but will instead run parallel to the creek, bypass the old start of the bridges trail and also bypass the old start of the red bridge trail before it takes off to the right on the new bottom switchback trail. This trail will tie into the remaining switchbacks that make their way to the top of the hill. All of these switchbacks have been extended in length where they used to tie into old downhill trail. After these switchbacks finally come out on the upper portion of the hill, the trail will meander back down and re-cross the old down hill trail twice and eventually pop out onto the old red bridge trail. The red bridge trail will terminate at the end of the old bridges trail which will now become the start of the bridges trail. The bridges trail will come out at the top of the old washed out climbs above the waterfall where this will all tie into the re-routed trails in the pine forest area.
Right now the new loop can be ridden all the way to the waterfall as weedeating has been completed to this point. Technically the switchbacks after this section can also be ridden as I spent several nights last week "rough" weedeating these from bottom to top and back down to the red bridge trail to kind of re-layout the trail as the new switchback tie ins had become extremely overgrown from this winters rough cutting and were difficult to see. These sections still need to be finish weedeated but at least we can now tell where the trail is going.
If you have a little additional time after say riding the GSC, pop on over to Krug and ride some of the new stuff. Really need to start getting some traffic on it to get things firmed up.

Krug Progress Update

On Sunday Randy, Dave and I weedeated the new trail head section on the north side of the back parking lot at Krug. We then went over and hit the new section of trail that goes around the open field and back up the south side of the parking lot and eventually makes its way over to the gravel downhill by the animal pens. This trail ties into the old trail that (for those of you that remember) used to have the log jump on it and eventually ties into the tree house trail.
Tonight I went back and re-rough cut in an additional switchback trail to rectify what we lost due to the "misplacement" of the boulders. This portion of the trail contains several short switchbacks and is now ready to be weedeated. Once this is done it will tie together the trailhead section and the section to the south so that we can at least start riding these sections to get over to the treehouse trail. This is pretty much all new trail so it will be pretty soft to start but should firm up fairly quickly if we can get people to come up and start riding it.
Also, as was written in a previous post, the new trails above the waterfall have been weedeated and can be ridden also.
Still lots of work to be done but we are making progress.

Landahl

Well guys sorry I didn't make it out this weekend for trailwork. I already had plans to meet my brother and do some out of town riding. Thought I would post some photos for those of u interested in riding at Landahl. The trails are great, just a little muddy in certain sections. I'm all for the adoption of trails as mentioned before. We need to have a group meeting sometime to intiate this process. Any suggestions?

Wednesday, May 27, 2009

the weedeating continues...

I'm gonna hit the girlscout camp sat morning early and try to finish it up. Anyone else up for it? I have 2 extra heavyduty husqy trimmers, string, gas, etc... The earlier we start the earlier we'll be done. I'll be out around 6:30 am.

Another thing, it has been suggested multi times to assign sections of trail to a certain person. If they get weedy, then it is the assigned's responsibility to gwet em into shape. If you want to be a part of this, please comment below and we'll get together and divvy out areas. The trail fairy is getting tired and needs our help.

Remember: if you have time to ride, you have time to help with the maintainence of where you ride. The trail hippie

Krug Progress

Just wanted to post a few pics of the new stuff on the back side of Krug. Weedeating has been done on the new re-route of the rooted out "long climb" section and also through the new switchback sections in the pine forest area. Made it to the last switchback at the bottom of this section when I sheared the head attachment bolt in the new trimmer (guess I should have bought the Stihl!) Still have alot to do up there but if your curious you can go ride this new section (although it could stand to be hit with a blower). Also heard what sounded like another trimmer going somewhere up there when I was leaving. That's awesome if someone was up there working on some of the other sections too! Should be a blast when we get it all completed!

Weather can't get any better for riding! Trails are very nice... Thanks for all the hard work fellas...

GCS/ Brownie Trails

Well Randy and I have put a good dent into GSC. I worked today on GSC and completed Brownie trail with loppers and trimming as well. The trails are perfect despite all the rain we got. I have included a few pics of how it looked after all the hard work. I might get out Sunday for a ride/tree trimming ride.

a coupla riddles and some (new?) info

For all you Midwesterners out there...what's knee high by the 4th of July? That's right, it's corn. Now, what the #$%%$# is knee high now? That's right...the stinging nettles!

Now for the helpful stuff. The bike shop has moved to the Kirkpatrick building down at 7th and Francis or thereabouts. This is important knowledge because all of the powertools for our trailbuilding and maintainence that have been bought with donations are just sitting at said bikeshop. There is string for the trimmers and oil for the 2 stroke stuff. If you have your own stuff, great. If not, this stuff is for our use.

I look at it as if you have time to ride, you have time to do a little maintainence on the trails. The trail fairies that come out at night and do the work are getting tired. Give em a hand! hippie

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

THANKS!!!

Just wanted to thank everyone who has been helping out with the weedeating.
Looks like "Tundra Twins" (Randy and Brian) were out on the GSC and Brownie today. The trails are really shaping up nicely. Appreciate all the effort guys.

Monday eve ride...

Headed out with the speedy twins, Lansen and Hoppy. Good lord, I tell you they are from Norwegian Cross-country stock (Two of you are probably going to get that)… Anyway, it was a wonderful eve of riding and the trails are sweeeeeeet!

Saw a ton of new faces out there, which is down right awesome.. Hey, fellas (maybe a lady or so too), on this site, don’t be bashful now, I know we don’t hear from ya much… I know the Trail-Hippy is kinda scary at first, but he aint nothing but a big ole teddy bear…

Crowder

Randy, Hoppy, Lansen and I (Jason) had some good riding out at Crowder (well, kinda). Apparently, being the geniuses we are it rained quite a bit more up in Trenton than it did down here, as it was slow goings virtually the entire time. Had to walk the bikes quite a bit.
Some parts as you can see were very wet..

Its such a nice trail system, it would have been nice if it were dry. Did I mention it was reaaaly muddy?
Some of us enjoyed the mud more than others!

Well we did not drive all that way for nothing, so we did get a couple of good hours of riding in, felt it a bit today.. Towards the end of the ride, we found some dryish riding, all and all it was still a blast...

Look, its not only me that Randy has to fix!! Here he is taking care of Mr. Speedy aka Hoppy…

Thursday riding and stuff

Mr. Crook and myself had a most excellent ride on the Corby trails and both Girlscout trails yesterday. A month of surfing has NOT helped my cycling fitness. I coughed hard once and Crook got a piece of lung stuck on his Oakleys. Andy Clements had the poles delivered to Krug. He also said he can get a bobcat to drag what we want where, but just maybe on a Friday afternoon. We need to know what we want where, have it cut and ready, and they will do the dragging. The nettles are already getting tall on North, as witnessed by my itching legs today. Weedeating is in our near future. Howsabout a Crowder trip on May 9th? That's a Sat I think. They have real showers and shitters for those of you with tender bums.Peace

Utility Poles for Krug

There is now a big pile of utility poles up at Krug. It will no doubt take some serious manpower and perhaps a 4x4 quad to get them into the trails. Fun...

Bone Bender

Race ON!
The Bone Bender 3/6 hour is running rain or shine. The awesome Smithville Trail Crew is prepping the course today and hoping the rain stays south as predicted right now. We may get some precipitation, but we will be running the race either way. We've got 70+ registered racers so we will probably see the field swell to well over 125 by race time.

Good luck to everyone who is going!!! Wish I could be with ya.

Someone please post how it went when you get back.. Smooth is fast! Or so I have been told anyway..

Good Riding...

It was a great day to ride.. Headed out with Brad and Brian. All the trails looking are looking good…

Saw JSpell out there and heard that Don was out somewhere also… I know there were more, sorry if I missed you on here.

Looks like there is no rain forecasted till Sat… Good luck to everyone racing this weekend…

Also, got a update from Randy in Florida… He is working out hard surfing, will be in fine shape when he gets back.. Sent a pic.. Is that a lawn chair and speedo's?

Monday, April 13, 2009

Hope you got a ride in this weekend..

Looks like its going to be wet this week…

Saturday was perfect; Jim, Brad and I got a good ride in. Well, at least Jim and I did, we think Brad had the brown bottle flu. Did all 4 trails and they are in pretty good shape.
Back side if Girlscout has some wet spots but other than that the riding was nice.

Thought I would put a pic in here for those of you who have not been out.. Just a little reminder..

This is called a singletrack... Say it with me... Seeienglle traaack...

I am getting pretty pumped, spring is going to be here soon... The hill by the tennis courts on Corby S. is pretty tough right now, its soft and rutted out.. But at least when your out of breath cussing yourself because your not in shape, you have time to take a pic.

Where is Robert Frost aka. Lansen the poet biker when you need him?

All of you going this weekend, good luck, 2 1/2 hours kicked my ass.

We need a head count for the Bone bender race on the 18th, just post here. Jp has a new blog with team info on it www.jpcyclingstillrollingalong.blogspot.com check it out.

Utility Pole Update

I met with KCP&L regarding donation of old utility poles. The available supply is less than stellar as far as length of poles and the donation is in the hands of their legal dept for now.
If I understood correctly, their regular clean up contractor was already given the green light to pick up the entire supply, thus if the donation isn't approved quickly, there may not be any poles available.

Regarding lengths, there are a couple poles perhaps in the 24ft range and maybe a few more around the 16ft we needed, but otherwise most of the stock is less than 8ft... or much shorter. In other words, our wish list of 28 poles at least 16ft in length won't be happening anytime soon as far as KCP&L availability. I do appreciate the consideration they're making. I hope to hear back soon.

I suggest that the mtb group start searching for alternative sources or materials.

Howsabout a work day at Krug if the race cancels?

You have the time off, the weather isn't suitable for much else, and I want to see a couple others try to keep up with Dave and his big Stihl saw running wide open. Jason and I fell behind the last time we cleaned up behind Dave. He was apparently on a mission, and succeeded quite well at keeping our a$$es busy! Let's do 3-4 hours, then get Jason to buy us lunch and beer somewhere...in fact, let's insist on it. 8am in the back of Krug on 2nd street.

Bone Bender

This is off their site:

“We have received a lot of emails regarding current course conditions for this weekends Bone Bender 3/6 Hour MTB Odyssey. Currently the trails at Smithville Lake are closed due to recent snow fall and rains. We are watching the weather closely and hoping that any more rain stays away giving the trails time enough to dry for Saturday's event. In the event that we have to postpone the event to April 18th, 2009, we will make that final call by this Wednesday.”

Wednesday, March 4, 2009

need more info for bone bender & demo bikes

Jp needs shirt sizes and ages for everyone racing so we can get everyone signed up right. Marin and maybe Haro are sending us demo bikes to race at the bone bender. Marin is sending a Med. and Lrg. Mt. Vision and Haro maybe a Sonics. These are great modles for endurance racing.

jerseys bone bender and other stuff

This is a reminder from JP about jerseys. Kelly, Greg, Randy and maybe Lansen have paid so please disregard if you have paid.
Shawn,
I have not received money for the following jersey orders:
Russ Dog
Greg ?
Kelly M.
Jason
Nick
Mike Ratcliff
Randy T.
Larry
Lansen
Total of 9 at $35.00 each = $315.00
They hit the account for the remainder of what was owed on the 15th, this means the kits will be in SOON!! That is great news!
I will be in St. Joe on Wed., can run by the shop around noon. Pick up the rest of the $$ and look at the calendar for a team meeting, kit hand out? We can also discuss posting a Bonebender race deadline, so that I can submit a list of racers, categories and a team check for the race??
Later,
JP

Here is another from JP. Lansen any chance of getting JP posting power.

Shawn,
Could you please post this below?
BoneBender!!!
Anyone on the team who is planning to race the Bone Bender on March 14th at Smithville Lake, please post to this blog. I will need your name and category that you will be racing. I would like to contact the promoter next by Friday Feb. 27th with a team head count. I guess I would need your name, first and last, age group, category, etc. This is one of the team sponsored races, so entry is paid for by our generous sponsors. It is much easier to write one check for the team, than reimburse everyone individually. If you have already registered no problem, I will issue you a check at the race.
Jersey's will be in, hopefully, by the first week of March. What I would like to do, is have a meeting at Force of Nature on Monday Night March 9th to hand out jerseys and have our first team meeting. Time will be determined, but we could try to do a ride and then the meeting, since daylight savings will begin on March 8th? Just a thought?
I am looking forward to riding and racing with you all in 2009! New daddy duties have kept me from riding much the last 3 weeks, but I plan on living on the bike a lot starting this weekend! Time to get ready for 2009!!
See you all soon!
JP
P.S. Let's take some of that stimulus money and ask the parks department for money to provide a bike patrol on the trails for the weekends. That would kick some people off there horses and out of the trails??

Horses & Motorcycles @ Krug!

This past Saturday while hiking with family, a couple on horses passed us going up the hill south of waterfall & tearing it up.  I asked them if they were supposed to be there and the man said they could.  Also saw fresh motorcycle tracks in the same area.  Nothing worst for groomed trails than the destructive power of horse hoofs or irresponsible motor heads spinning out their rear wheels.

This is the first sign of horses in the years I've been playing back there.  If indeed horses are allowed and this is only the first of more horse & motorcycle outings to come, we can say goodbye to descent mtb riding and ya guys might as well stop all the current hard work on relocating trails.  Cause as Lansen and I got to experience first hand about a year ago in Waubonsie SP, the trails will turn to shitt... literally!

Bridges for Krug

KCP&L (T&D) has indicated the potential for donation of utility poles for trail bridges. I'm working with them on the details as far as the "red tape" is concerned, but I would like to know how many bridges and what spans you're looking at, so we'll know how many poles to ask for. I believe it would be in everyone's best interest to follow the specs set out in the engineered plans contained on the IMBA site. KCP&L needs specifics to provide a level of comfort from the liability side of things.

Please let me know if someone has already made other arrangements for bridge materials, so I can disregard if that is the case. The local plant manager is a relative, so I asked him to check on it for me.

Heartland Racing: Good Times Tour

After the suggestion of hosting a Heartland MTB tour up here, I thought I would just shoot them over an email for the hell of it.
So, now if you read below is a done deal(ish), we need to start figuring out when would be the best time to do it.
I emailed her back saying that early spring would not work as Krug will not be ready.
Our local hippy rednecks need to build 132 bridges to make all the trail cutting work!!!!

On another note, we actually had a decent turnout Sat doing trail work freezing our bojangles off.. Of course Hip and Hop leading the way.....

Let me know your thoughts and I can get back to her.......

Subject: RE: Heartland Racing: Good Times Tour

Jason,
Sounds good! When would you like to host one?
Cheers,
Amber

This is an enquiry e-mail via http://www.heartlandrace.com from:Jason Douglas

We would love to host one up here in St. Joseph! We are re-routing Krug Park right now and built a new trail system last winter. Once that is finished we are going to have three seperate trail systems. All of which you can ride to.

Let's do the Polar Bear Plunge

It's at Lake Contrary on Feb 7th at 2pm. Ya gotta raise 50 bucks. This may be where a clydesdale has the advantage! Come on you sissy boys and girls, let's do it! If I can ride my fat a$$ up the hills, you skinny people can come and play in the H2O with me.

Trail Work - Saturday AM - Krug

HOLY CRAP, what a turnout!

23 outta 26 team members came and worked on the trails Sunday morn. I tried to get a pic with the phone but it just wouldn't capture the whole scene. Yep, everyone was there but...YOU! the a-picture-is-worth-a-thousand-words hippie.

jerseys, race team, I need your size

This is a e-mail from JP Shores about the race team and jerseys. Speak now or forever hold you peace. I have the following people down for these size jerseys, let me know soon if I haven't included/excluded you or got your size wrong.

Craig L
Larry XL
Randy XXL
Mike Ratcliff XL
Nick XL
Greg M
Shawn M
Derick Boos?
Emma Boos?
Kyle Boos?
Dave Crook?
Brad Bob?
Dr. Adam?

Any one else?

Shawn,

Could you please e-mail me names and sizes for the jerseys. I will probably order some extra size large and a couple xl in case we get some additional riders to join as the season gets closer. The cost of the jerseys will be $35.00 for the first jersey, if anyone wants a second jersey it will be reg. cost of $45.00.

Bib shorts and regular shorts are also available. I will need to check on the cost of those items? We are saving some of the money for entry fee's to some select local races in the area for 2009. I would say that the first 3/6 hr. race in Smithville would be a team race and anyone who can race, there entry or any two person team for the 3/6 hr. race will be covered as long as they are on the team. Requirements are to purchase a jersey.

I would like to get all of this together and place the final order by the end of the week. The products will be her within 8 weeks of the final order. If you want to collect the checks and then just write me one check that is fine, we will just need a list of names and sizes to place the order.

Thanks!

JP

This costs so please don't stiff us if you say you want a jersey. Paying for that one 3/6 race is the jersey's cost alone. Please let me know soon!!!!!

The Corby Night Life

Juston and I took a brief stroll Wednesday night.

My limited experience on the the trails is evident in the attached photos.
Took a couple of turns too fast and of course couldn't resist the opportunity for some trials.
Juston faired a bit better with only a minor mishap while passing under a low tree limb.

Trail Work This Saturday - Krug

How about a trail work day this coming Saturday? I'd like to meet up at the top of Krug around 8:00 am.
Hoping to get the middle switchbacks and the new extensions to the existing switchbacks rough cut along with possibly the new tie in trail leading out of the existing switchbacks back down to the old red bridge trail. I hope to have all of the final flagging completed this week so we should have plenty to work on.
On Saturday I flagged the new upper switchback section that eliminates the "Brokeneck Bob" trail and re-routed the washed out parts of the two remaining outer trails. Kind of broke my heart to do away with the washed out rooted sections but we really had no choice. The new upper section through the pine forest is going to be really fun though and will also add some pretty good length to the trail.
I have tried my absolute best to lay out the new sections with singlespeeders in mind. My goal is to have the entire loop completely singlespeed rideable in at least one direction.
I plan to map out (gps) the entire loop once the rough cutting is done to to determine actual length but at this point I'm hoping for a good 6 plus miles.
It looks to be cold on Saturday so bundle up!
Please let me know if you can make it up to help.
Thanks,
CH

New Years Trail Work - Krug

Would anyone be available to put in some trail work time at Krug on New Years morning?
I plan to be up there at 8 am. We will be clearing some new short sections of tie in trail just below the area where the haunted forest takes place (Tom Bennett trails) and possibly a few short sections of trail to tie in the old tree house trail. Also plan to take out the bridge planks at the bottom of the tree house trail and move them to the new location where this trail is being re-routed to.
Great way to start off the new year and as many of you have said, now is the time to be doing this work.

What's Next?

Hey everyone…
I’m excited and thankful about everything you guys are doing up at Krug. The timing appears to be near perfect as I have had a few recent discussions with city staff regarding the possibility of sponsoring some type of annual bike festival in an effort to promote the city’s park system as well as community wellness. In my opinion, Krug Park is the ideal location for the center of activities. I’m thinking in terms of XC racing, a starting/stopping point for road racing, trials comp/demo, beginner clinics, live music and food… or perhaps awards, music, food, videos, raffles, etc at the civic arena after the races whereby alcohol could be served/consumed, since it’s illegal in the parks.

Please understand that I don’t have the authority to make promises or commit resources on behalf of the City of St. Joseph. Staff has asked for my input and will likely rely on that input when making decisions as it pertains to the city’s involvement, if any. At this point, it appears that Parks and Recreation Director, Bill McKinney will have to grant permission as it pertains to many key aspects of bike related activities in the parks. Naturally, the city council may have some involvement depending on the nature and extent of city finances and other resources. I believe some of you may have worked with Mr. McKinney on various elements up to this point.

I have not spoken with him regarding the use of Krug Park for a bike related festival/event. I would like to make sure that all of us are on the same page and fully supportive of all activities that may be pursued. I think most of you know that my interest is in observed trials, thus I would like to pursue that aspect of the big picture, however I will not go it alone as I believe biking venues and events are made better by complimenting activities. I believe that perhaps the biggest part of growing any sport is reaching out to the spectators who, depending on what they see and hear may decide to get involved themselves… especially the kids… pull them away from the video games.

Simply put, not everyone wants to sit around watching a trials rider like me struggling to get over a rock and not everyone wants to stand beside a trail waiting for an XC rider to come by… but, when you put everything together and provide options, people start to feel the “Vibe” that all of us love. How many times have you heard people say, it wasn’t the race or the comp that made it cool, it was the before and after, it was the people, the whole scene, the “Vibe”. Thanks to many of you, St. Joe now has an awesome trail system that keeps getting better.

So, here’s my question for all of you… and responses are needed… Would you support this type of event and be willing to meet with and speak to the necessary people to get the wheels turning? My sincere apologies if this is something that you’re already working towards and I just haven’t heard about it. We must have a unified group approach with as many supporters as we can get… even if it’s just someone willing to say, “Yes, I would like to see this in St. Joseph.”

This post is not intended to be all inclusive by any means. Just wanted to get the discussion started in a format that everyone can view and provide input. Again, I make no promises on behalf of the city, nor has the city committed to anything at this point. Given the current economy, there’s no telling what kind of support there may be in the coming months.

I'd love to sit down and have a face to face discussion with everyone at some point if possible.
Thanks.
Ed

Patient Anticipation

before the sunrise, when the first light breaks over the horizon and twilight begins to bring the scenery back to light.... the cold is deep in us. too cold to shake off, and all we want and need are those warm rays of light to stir us back to life.

but it doesn't matter how cold we are. it doesn't matter how much we want that sun sent warmth. and we can only position ourselves to a point - and then there is nothing more we can do but sit quietly in the twilight; waiting for the light to come. we can do nothing to speed the ascending salvation we need so badly. we can do nothing but fill ourselves with silent patience and the faith that our sun will come to save us from the cold.

And then the Sun Bursts over the Horizon. We feel Invigorated, as though we had Never been so close to freezing. We Forget the pain radiating through our Bodies as the cold night draws to a close and the Warmth of a New Day Bathes The Earth with Love and the Heat of Life.

A Whole New Perspective is in Play NOW. The problems of the cold night are an unpleasant memory, but seem Distant and Unreal NOW. The World is Filled with Colors. There is Music from the Birds and Squirrels, and things are so Different than they were just a Moment Ago. And the Priorities Change, and The Soul Changes, and the Person Changes - for Another Day; We Press Forward TOWARD ANOTHER NIGHT. Toward Another Night. toward another night. toward another night. toward another night

where it's at

when do you feel lost and small?

where do you find quiet solice?

where do you find beauty?

where do you find peace and joy?

is there a right answer for everyone?

for anyone?

do you know your answers?

are they same today as they were yesterday?

somehow we keep moving forward toward the answers we believe in today; and maybe tomorrow. forward toward a desired experience, a desired person, a desired object, or a desired feeling. sometimes our ships find port. sometimes they don't. and yet we sail on. on through the questions and toward the answers of a new year.

Merry Christmas!!

I hope Sata brought you all new MTB parts and toys...

Shirts, Wood & Move

First things first the jerseys are getting the final designs finished. I need everybodys sizes and know who's in on the cross/mtb/road team. There will be some expense to the jerseys but with all the donations (thanks Craig/Larry) it will be less though. Next week we will have a sample jersey. Next I'm moving locations next month so sorry to be lacking on trail building but I needed to get things rolling for the new shop. Since I'm moving I have lots of wood in the back room that needs to be moved to Krug. That should be a good modivation to get bridges built, I'll let you know when we will have a bridge day. Once all the lumber is at Krug we need to get them done before Buba moves crap around on us. We have a generator now to run power tools and maybe two soon so we can tackle two bridges at a time. If Lance want to bring his thats three. I like Craig's ideas on the Krug routes the only thing I would like to add would be a little more on the tree house trail.

Time of Year to be TRAINING!!

It really sucks to think about, but now is the time get your training into full gear to come out guns a blazin come spring.
I read this post from Cornbread out of Lincon.. Pretty interesting..
I know Dr. Allen Smith out at Performance Plus can test your VO2 Max if your interested...

Your VO2 Max is what is is though, I would rather focus on increasing our anaerobic threshold.... That is where we are going to make the most gains... I know there are tons of resources out there, so post what works best for MTB....

Here you go, its a (rather) short read....

Recently, I did a metabolic stress test (often referred to as a VO2max or a cardiopulmonary stress test) on a local elite athlete. The test results were outstanding for this individual. In fact, the results were some of the highest that I’ve seen on a test subject. The only other one higher was on a classmate of mine in grad school and he was a Division I cross country star. The results were also significantly higher than I’ve ever achieved.
The test got me thinking about the basic physiology of an aerobic athlete and what makes one faster or more powerful than another. Why are some individuals “natural” aerobic athletes while others struggle to hang on to the back of the pack?
WARNING! Geekdom at it’s finest approaching
VO2max is the ability to consume oxygen and utilize it for aerobic glycolysis. The muscles use oxygen in aerobic glycolysis to break down stored carbohydrates and eventually produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate). The high energy phosphate bond in ATP is what allows muscles to contract.
Man, I wish I had a syringe of ATP to inject into my legs during cross. Kinda like nitrous oxide for your legs. Unfortunately, that wouldn’t work and would probably kill you.
Anyways, back to the nerdy stuff, if the cardiovascular and pulmonary system cannot sustain the volume of oxygen required by aerobic glycolysis, the body will begin to call upon anaerobic glycolysis to help keep up with the muscle’s demand for ATP. Aerobic means with oxygen and anaerobic is without oxygen. Anaerobic glycolysis isn’t as efficient as its bro aerobic glycolysis and only provides a fraction of the ATP from the same amount of carbohydrate. So anaerobic glycolysis is kinda like the friend you call as a last resort to pick you up from downtown when you’ve had too much to drink. You really don’t want to go there, but you have no choice.
Anaerobic glycolysis results in lactic acid (actually lactate and hydrogen ions) as a nasty byproduct of producing those valuable ATP’s. That’s the familiar burn we’ve all felt on numerous occasions and especially during cross country races, crits and cross. So as the body is unable to provide sufficient volume of oxygen to the working muscles through aerobic means, the balance swings from aerobic to anaerobic glycolysis. As a result the muscles and lungs begin to suffer. Eventually if a person “red lines” for too long the muscles will shut down. The hydrogen ions from the lactic acid combine with bicarbonate ions and form carbonic acid which spontaneously dissociates into water and carbon dioxide. The increase in water isn’t such a bad thing, but the increase in carbon dioxide eventually has detrimental effects. A lot of folks don’t know this, but carbon dioxide is actually what triggers us to breath. Not a lack of oxygen.
Now there are several ways one athlete can be superior to another in various physiological systems which leads to a higher VO2max. Huge lungs help. Also a great diffusion capacity (ability to transfer oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from the lungs and the blood) is vital. Any kind of pulmonary disease (asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and smoking) can hinder the delivery of oxygen to the blood.
After the lungs come the heart and vascular system. Having a big strong and efficient pump (heart) is also critical, but if the plumbing is shitty the delivery of oxygen is hindered. Atherosclerosis (heart and vascular disease) will narrow those arteries and make them less compliant and impede delivery of oxygen rich blood. Pressure is also higher in small pipes which can lead to greater endothelial insult and subsequently more atherosclerosis. It’s a vicious cycle.
Now once at the starving muscles, AVO2difference (arterial venous difference) is the next critical physiological variable. The AVO2difference is simply the difference in the oxygen content of the arterial blood and venous blood. The arterial blood drops off oxygen to the working muscles and become venous blood (artery away from the heart and venous towards). The venous blood goes back to the heart and then the lungs to pick up more oxygen and start the cycle over again. Some individuals have higher AVO2differences than others. This was the great debate when I was in grad school. What is the deciding factor in a high VO2? There was the central theory (the big pump – heart) and the peripheral theory (AVO2difference). I personally think you gotta have both, but there really is no way to easily measure AVO2difference potential. The heart can be assessed rather easily with echocardiogram, CT and even catheterization.
Some folks just have better genes for dropping off oxygen. If you got Norwegian genes, consider yourself lucky. The highest ever recorded VO2max results were from Norwegian cross country skiers. Records for VO2max are 96 ml/kg/min for men (Bjorn Daehlie) and conflicting records for females, but most state 80’s. Greg Lemond was 92.5 ml/kg/min at his peak and I’ve read that Lance was near 94 ml/kg/min. Just to put it into perspective, dogs used in the Iditarod can be as high as 240 ml/kg/min. Just think how fast you would be if your Mom was a canine. Maybe Dr. Moreau was on to something.
Bottom line is the really great aerobic athletes are the ones who were given great genes from their parents. A lot of one’s ability is predetermined at birth. Training can dramatically improve initial performance, but once an athlete is trained it is very difficult to increase the VO2max.
Now once the VO2max is determined, the one thing that can be shaped to increase performance is anaerobic threshold. I’ll save that discussion for another day.

Proposed Krug Loop

For those of you who are familiar with Krug, this is my take on how we can make one long loop out of it. Some of the washed out gulley areas need to be re-routed, bridges need to be built, several existing sections need to be completely blocked off, a few new sections need to be flagged and several new sections are currently being rough cut. We have purposely tried to steer clear of the "haunted forest" area as much as possible as they seem to do whatever they want for their precious few weeks every year.
The goal is to make one long loop, eliminate as much as possible the confusing intersections and short cuts and to make this trail as single speed friendly as possible while still maintaining much of what we had in the past.
Also, I am not a fan of building trails just to build trails and I don't think we really need to add much more in the way of length to Krug. I for one do not look forward to maintaining much more than what we currently have with the Corbies, GSC, the Brownie, Krug and Sun Bridge.
Maybe if more people would get involved with trail maintenance I could see building more but at this point with the limited number of people willing to pitch in I just don't see the point.
Krug will never be an "easy" place ride and in my opinion that is not a bad thing. What it will be is an extremely fun trail that will provide as good a work out as you could ask for around these parts.
We could use all the help we can get with this as it is a pretty major undertaking. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to post them here.

Now THAT was a good night ride!

I first want to apologize for my lack of eloquence/elegance with my writing. Lansen is SOOOO comfortable with his mangina that prose seems to effortlessly spew forth from his pie hole.

Crook and I started out last night riding downtown, as I saw a bike come in the shop from Corby North that contained most of the topsoil that we so diligently try to preserve. We made our way out to the casino where I told the security guy we were NOT gonna leave $3k worth of bikes outside for some butthole to take. After some 10 minutes of waiting they let us put em inside in a storage room. We had a very mediocre buffet and commenced to ride(Dave) and walk/push(hippie) up the long Highland/Waterworks dirt hill into the bluffs at about 8:30. The trail was getting frozen and not really muddy at all except where there were those f'ing leaves! The views of the Kansas side were amazing with the bright-ass moon along the middle trail. There are now even more of those landscape timbers across the main trail. The trail now may last longer than we are alive, but it sure makes for a sore ass. We rode through Krug w/o any problems and saw all the lights strung throughout the park. We came through the first tunnel on the roadway and the cars were all backed up. We took the right side and started passing with pleasure until the glare ice reared it's ugly head in the corner. I thought for sure we were gonna pull one of Dave's patented 2 wheel drifts and plow a car or 2, but it never happened. We then made our way to Corby North and found it to be perfect. The tracks from the earlier soil-sampling ride were very evident. With Dave's light and my legs and lungs fading fast, we went back to the shop and loaded up.
I am sorry now that I didn't do more night rides this year. Commuting to work at 4:30 am is technically riding in the dark, I guess, but somehow just not the same. Point being is that if you arent Dave or the hippie you missed out! The night-riding hippie

Night ride on Friday anyone?...Beuhler...Beuhler...class...

Mr Crook and myself are going on a nightride Friday night at 6:30 pm from Corby to wherever the money takes us. We can't stay out too late, as trailwork at Krug happens Sat morn at 8:30 a. and lights only last 6 or so hours. The I-wish-my-lights-were-brighter hippie.

Trailwork Sat morning?

Any of you buttholes up for some work? Krug needs more lovin. 8:30 if you want, top of the hill through the Jurassic Park rocks. RT
